Location of Moraira

Situated in the Marina Alta, you encounter a former fishermen's enclave and shipping port that preserving its origins and its privileged environment has become a popular tourist destination. Thanks to the orientation of the coast and the location of the surrounding mountains, it has a perfect microclimate all the year round.

Landscape and surroundings of Moraira

Moraira is popular amongst tourists for its sports yacht club and the 8km extension of beaches and charming coves, all with the prestigious Blue Flag award. From the small rocky beach of "The Cove", or a sail along the Cape of d'Or you can enjoy the calm and crystalline waters of the beach of the Porter, where you are able to enjoy a relaxing bathe. In addition Moraira has some remarkable monuments, from the defensive tower that dominates the beach, known as "Moraira's castle", the coastal fortification of the "Tower of the Cap of d'Or" dominating the highest point above the beach of the Portet, as well as the archaeological site of "La Cova de les Cendres" in the Cap of d`Or.

General information about Moraira

From the inland town of Teulada to the coast of Moraira, there is a rugged terrain covering 6 kms, offering magnificent views and attractive excursions along its small hills, vineyards and pine forests. Once in Moraira you can enjoy its tradition and historical heritage reflected in its church of Holy Catalina and its chapels of the Divine Shepherdess and San Vicente.

Moraira traditions

A lively town full of celebrations and festivals, with an extensive calendar of events in which to enjoy their traditions. On Easter Monday, the Teuladinos celebrate the festival of its saint: St. Vincent Ferrer lasting 10 days, the most important celebration of Moraira. In June they worship their "Virgin of the helpless", in honor of the Holy Christ. The Moors and Christians are also celebrated, as well as the annual fisherman festival: the "Virgin del Carmen".

During the month of February, two events take place: "The Festival of the Lady" and a carnival, and in September there is the festival of the muscatel grape, celebrating the award-winning and famous wines Moscatel and "Marina Alta" (White Wine). The end of the calendar sees the celebration on November 25th of the "Santa Catalina" festival, in honor of the patron saint of the region. Each particular festival is combined with different culinary events.

Gastronomy of Moraira

The tradition goes hand in hand with the cuisine of Moraira, rich and famous for its variety, offering great dishes to savor the fruits of its land and sea. With dishes like "The putxero of Polp" and "the cocques with tomaca" to name but a few, this gastronomical calendar of rice, fish, seafood, stews and a large number of recipes, which include meat, game and locally produced ingredients is considered one of the best in the Valencian Community.

This would not be complete without the accompaniment of the best wines of the Marina Alta, a name given to the white wine locally produced with "Moscatel Romano" grapes, winning several awards, and the Mistela wine, produced with the sweet grapes of Moraira which accompanies the sweet treats of the region.
