Geographical location of La Nucía

La Nucia town council is part of the Marina Baja area in the province of Alicante. It is located in a gorgeous valley with fruit orchards at the foot of Ponoch Mountain (1181 m), in between Benidorm and Calllosa d'Ensarria, bordering Polop village. A ravine and a tributary of the river Guadalest separate Polop from La Nucía. Neighbouring town councils also include Altea and Alfaz del Pi.

Scenery and area of La Nucía

Because of the magnificent combination of the sun, the mountains and the beach, the people in La Nuca maintain a strong connection with nature. The city is surrounded by a green carpet of pine trees and fruit orchards offered by the mountains of Sierra de Aitana and La Aixorta. This protects the city from Northern winds, which results in an annual minimum temperature of at least 15 degrees Celsius and makes sure you are always able to enjoy the sun.

The beguiling blend of sun and mountains attracted a small community of national and international inhabitants, living in various residential areas of mainly detached houses in the "Barranco Hondo", "Coloma", "Bello Horizonte", "El Tossal", "Nou Espai" and "Panorama" neighbourhoods.

Sports and recreation in La Nucía

La Nucía is known for its traditional features and especially for the festival in honour of the patron saint San Vincente, celebrated on Easter Monday, in the chapel of nature preserve Cautivador. On this day, the saint patron is honoured with live folklore music, barbecues, concerts and activities for young and old. During the rest of the year, we recommend you to visit the large garden of "La Fuenta la Fava" in order to admire the Mediterranean native plants and trees, where a big waterfall offers you the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful summers day.

The Hiking and mountaineering possibilities and the opportunities to practice nature sports are, without a doubt, the reason for the big touristic success of the area. This includes the 23 kilometres of hiking trails running through the heart of La Nuca. Six different trails connect the city to nature preserve Cautivador.

Another highlight for mountain and sports lovers is the Via Ferrata (iron road) of Ponoch mountain, a medium level hiking trail offering the opportunity of 4 hours of hiking with 400m slopes. It is considered to be one of the most athletic "ferratas" trails in the province of Alicante.

Traditions of La Nucía

Ever since the Swedish Jorge Beer organised a flea market in 1982 in order to attract more customers for his bar, the market has become more and more popular and has developed into one of the biggest tourist attractions in town. Today, there are over 700 stalls on a market longer than 2km, where salesmen try to sell their second-hand products.

Gastronomy in La Nuca

La Nucía, being a well-known touristic town city, has a large and various selection of dishes to offer in its many restaurants that can't wait to convince the taste buds of both the national as well as the international tourists that don't accept anything less than quality.

Within the local cuisine, the Arroz cocido (cooked rice), Minxos a la paleta (small pancakes of corn and wheat), Embutidos y Queso fresco (meat products and cheeses), Verduras de la huerta (home grown vegetables) and especially the local dish Piloto de Dacsa are highly recommended.

The preservation of the traditional ovens resulted in the fact that the typical and irresistible magdalenas (muffins), berlinas (stuffed donuts), pasteles de almendras (almond cookies), coca dulce (sweet angel cake), going incredibly well with the legendary sweet wine Mistela La Marina, have been seducing us for several generations.
