After the Berber plundering and the Spanish Civil war, the Town hall proposed in 1956 to urbanize the city with the purpose of creating a city for the tourism and leisure industry. Benidorm is nowadays a modern and complete city and has become the tourism and leisure capital, not only of the Costa Blanca or of Spain, but all of Europe.
Its big skyscrapers show in an emblematic way its endeavor of overcoming and prospering. It is the city with more skyscrapers per inhabitant of the world, including one that is the highest hotel in Spain, the Bali III; and currently under construction the highest residential building of Europe, the Untempo reaching a height of 200 m.
In reality Benidorm is more than just skyscrapers. It hides beauty in every corner of the city and has a great number of visitors interested in the cultural and rich history such as the " Torre Punta del Cavall " placed in the Nature reserve of the Sierra Helada, the " Tossal de la Cala " point of commercial exchange and landing-place from ancient times, and the " Church of San Jaime and Holy Ana " on the summit of the Canfalí hill, in the ancient part of the city, built after the discovery of the mistress of Benidorm: the Virgin of the Suffrage.
Its theme parks: Terra Mítica, Aqualandia and Mundomar, and its natural landscapes will satisfy the early-morning family fun. Its varied and rich gastronomy including the rice dishes will give energy to continue during the night, enjoying the cabaret shows of the Benidorm Palace, to the pubs and discotheques on and near the beaches, which cater to all kinds of tastes to all nationalities
Thanks to its geographical location and its four mountains: Puig Campana, Sierra Helada, Sierra Cortina and Tossal de la Cala, which surround and protect it from the elements, the city lives all year round having the best European temperatures, the balmy Mediterranean climate that helps all to enjoy its main attraction: the beaches of Levante, Poniente and Mal Pas, groomed and pampered throughout the year; keeping them clean to retain their blue flags which have been awarded year after year by the European Union since 1987.
The beach of The Levante concentrates the most number of bathers along his two kilometers of beachfront, from the Old town up to the Sierra Helada and the Ricón de Loix. On the other hand, the beach of The Poniente stretching from the Old town up to Finestrat's neighboring cove. Both offer the possibility of enjoying aquatic sports, such as the jet skis, hang gliding, waterskiing, windsurfing, scuba diving and sailing cruises and excursions
In the historical centre situated at the top Canfali, we can find Benidorm's emblematic image with its balustrade white stone and its viewing-point. El Mirador de la Punta de Canfali served as a defense before the Algerian and Berber invasions of the 14th,15th and 16th centuries and nowadays offers the more leisurely activity, to walk on the "Balcony of the Mediterranean".
